I’m not sure I did this right, but here’s the peas and beans transplanted into the garden. It was hard freaking work getting the ground ready and trellis built. The varieties of plants I got get 6′ tall and heavy so I wanted to make it as strong as possible. Here’s to hoping I did well!
Tales from the Crypt
I never actually watched that show…
Tried to kill myself getting the taters planted today, but they’re in the ground and I’m a little worse for the wear.
Here’s my absolutely adorable youngest helper.
The 3 trays that are just about ready to go outside. The other 2′s plants are still too little.
Inside the triangle is the taters, it looks like a little graveyard with tiny corpse mounds and popsicle stick headstones. Behind the taters, the corn will be planted, and just this side of the 3 horizontal logs will be the trellis and peas/beans.
Strawberry bed, closer. Thar be green in that there garden! Arrrr!
The strawberries seem to be ok after all that cold, I see more green. One plant isn’t doing well, but the other 23 are growing.
Chris’ cousin gave us these hangers (among a bunch of other stuff) and I just had to get the hanging containers….just have to find something quick growing and affordable to put in them. Fuschias are SO expensive! Bleeding hearts are too big, at least I haven’t found a dwarf variety yet, so I’m thinking lavender…
My babies are growing up!
I’m just amazed how much better these are doing then my last attempt at gardening in Idaho (the time before that I was successful, but again, we were in Oregon, though North-East).
Roma and beefsteak tomatoes, broccoli, snow pea, green beans and sugar snap peas
Garlic, thyme, basil, broccoli, and cauliflower
Green pepper, roma & beefsteak tomatoes, and cauliflower
Early girl tomato, spinach, lettuce, oregano, asparagus, white onion, parsley, and chives
Basil, thyme, broccoli, white onion, and cauliflower
I have a lot of each, only the biggest and strongest will end up in the garden. I figured if I started out with 10x more then I actually need, I might get a few to actually produce.
The strawberries survived the freezing last night. They’re uncovered now (10 minutes after I uncovered them, it started to hail pea sized ice ball of course, I hope they are ok from that). I’ll cover them up again at night until Tuesday morning.
Beautiful, productive day
Got out into the garden today and prepped the back left square as best I could (tons of root balls and rocks and chunks of glass), and planted the strawberries, and put the fence up. Sadie (dog) was very put out that we did that to her, but considering she’s been coming in with muddy paws every day, I’m not losing my garden to her!
And the after, not a lot of difference, except in the 2nd picture you can see the back square that the strawberries are not in. I had planned on that one being tomatoes and strawberries, but the strawberries need more room then I realized.
Beautiful day – 70 degrees! It was 73 inside last I checked. The only downside is the awful sunburn I got – I’m bright, almost fluorescent, red. Oops.
Artificial light
I transplanted some of the broccoli seedlings to see if they’d grow better in the bunches or singled out, which might also depend on if they can handle being transplanted…then I did some research on artificial lighting and it seems seedlings do best with lots and lots of light (I assumed they needed breaks of dark and cool for some reason) so we brought the shop light in, cleaned off a counter and put them under it for the times the sun isn’t on the kitchen garden window.
Tilling the garden
- Got the tilling mostly done (it needs another pass).
- Mowed the back yard.
- Started a “proper” compost – half buried a 32 gallon plastic trash can in the ground and filled it with some of the “compost” I’ve been making (grass clippings) and the kitchen scraps I saved up this week. The can has holes drilled in the bottom and all over the sides, both above and below ground. Hoping it works well.
- Got the wood and twine for the peas and beans
- Got a new shovel cause I broke ours trying to dig up this evil bush (see pictures below, I’ll point out said evil bush), also got a weeding hoe and new rake to replace the one that was broken a while ago.
- Sold our Orchard Heaters, got what my dad and I paid for them 12 years ago, which paid for a bunch of the gardening supplies.
Dirt+boys=summer long entertainment.

I decided to leave a section unplanted to play in, otherwise these 2 will be rolling in the vegetables.

Aiden totally…….digs……his tractor in this dirt (pun intended, sorry)

I’m just cute. And I eat dirt.

This is the huge root we ran into while tilling…had to dig a big hole and use the chainsaw to get it cut far enough down it wouldn’t affect the garden.

The garden…or what will be. The bushes are “the evil bushes” They’re right smack dab in the middle of the yard and right in front of the gate…I’m working on digging up about 2 feet of them from the gate to allow a good walkway.

Now that it’s mowed, here’s pictures of the backyard:

That red machine is the tiller we rented…it’s so powerful, I wish we could afford to buy one that size.

In this one, I’ve got cauliflower, broccoli, beefsteak tomato, and white onions sprouting so far.
